چکیده

W2.8 Near-square islands form during sub-monolayer homoepitaxial growth on metal (100) surfaces. Diffusion of these islands after deposition leads to collision of island pairs, typically corner-to-comer creating dumbbell-shaped clusters. Subsequent coalescence (or sintering) recovers a near-square equilibrium shape. This process is mediated by periphery diffusion (PD) and its study can provide detailed insight into the underlying dynamic processes and energetics. Atomistic modeling reveals that the size scaling of the characteristic relaxation time, T, depends on the detailed energy barriers of various hopping processes that contribute to PD. Simulations without an extra kink or comer rounding barrier for PD reveals T ~ L 4 , while behavior approaching T ~ £ 3 is observed with a significant extra kink rounding barrier for PD. The latter is consistent with experimental observations for Ag/Ag(IOO) at 300 K.

Sintering of two-dimensional nanoclusters in metal(100) homoepitaxial systems: Deviations from predictions of Mullins continuum theory

We present a comparison of the predictions of atomistic and continuum models for the sintering of pairs of near-square two-dimensional nanoclusters adsorbed on the ͑100͒ surface in fcc metal homoepitaxial systems. Mass transport underlying these processes is dominated by periphery diffusion ͑PD͒ of adatoms along the edge of the clusters. A Mullins-type continuum model for cluster evolution incorpor...

Nucleation, growth, and kinetic roughening of metal(100) homoepitaxial thin films

A unified analysis is presented of submonolayer nucleation and growth of two-dimensional islands and the subsequent transition to multilayer growth during metal-on-unreconstructed metal(100) homoepitaxy. First, we review and augment recent developments in submonolayer nucleation theory for general critical size i (above which islands are effectively stable against dissociation). We discuss choi...

Island Diffusion and Coarsening on Metal (100) Surfaces

The diffusion and coarsening of two-dimensional homoepitaxial islands on Cu(100) and Ag(100) surfaces have been studied at room temperature with time-sequenced scanning tunneling microscopy. Quantitative analyses of the dependence of island diffusion coefficient D vs the island side length L, D ~ L , yield noninteger scaling exponents which are consistent with island coalescence. Moreover, the ...

Diffusion of two-dimensional epitaxial clusters on metal (100) surfaces: Facile versus nucleation-mediated behavior and their merging for larger sizes

For diffusion of two-dimensional homoepitaxial clusters of N atoms on metal (100) surfaces mediated by edge atom hopping, macroscale continuum theory suggests that the diffusion coefficient scales like DN∼N−β with β=3/2. However, we find quite different and diverse behavior in multiple size regimes. These include: (i) facile diffusion for small sizes N<9; (ii) slow nucleation-mediated diffusion...

Diffusion and submonolayer island growth during hyperthermal deposition on Cu(100) and Cu(111)

We consider the influence of realistic island diffusion rates to homoepitaxial growth on metallic surfaces using a recently developed rate equation model which describes growth in the submonolayer regime with hyperthermal deposition. To this end, we incorporate realistic size and temperature-dependent island diffusion coefficients for the case of homoepitaxial growth on Cu(100) and Cu(111) surf...
